Everybody Dance Now! Today we’re talking about the power of dance for physical health and fine-motor skill development. Yes, that means there is some educational merit to all of the Tik Tok dances being learned in your living room! When children learn dances, they’re not only moving their bodies, but they are practicing memorization and pattern creation in their brains. It can help with problem solving, observation skills, and practicing verbal and non-verbal communication. So go ahead, try it out! Below are some fun ideas to get dancing with your kids and maybe even learn something new yourself!

  1. Play freeze dance! An easy way to encourage movement and dance, and an opportunity to get a little silly in the meantime.

  2. Yes, you can learn a Tik Tok dance! This app has created dozens of popular dances to practice and master on your own time. If you don’t have the app or your little ones are too young for a smart phone, you can look up the dance tutorials on Youtube! You can also do more call-out song dances like the Cha Cha Slide, Electric Slide, or the Cupid Shuffle.

  3. Play a dance pattern game. Gather in a circle and have everyone do a different dance move, then try and practice the pattern from memory. Then do it backward. Test your family’s dance skills and memory!

  4. Play the animal dance game. Write down names of different animals on pieces of paper and put them in a bowl. Participants pick a piece of paper and make the animal noise, followed by a dance move imitating the animals movement. The rest of the group has to guess the animal!
