On January 31st, Casserly House invited families from our community to a fun and colorful outing at the BPL Roslindale Branch for the Dominican Carnaval Experience, organized by the Asociación Carnavalesca de Massachusetts.

The day kicked off with a surprise favorite: chess! A chess trainer introduced the children to the game, showing them how the pieces move and letting everyone practice a bit. Several kids loved it so much they’re already asking to come back and learn more.

Then it was time for carnaval fun. Families enjoyed seeing traditional Dominican Carnaval costumes, and the children took part in an interactive workshop where they designed and decorated their own miniature carnaval masks. With lots of colors, glitter, and creativity, each mask turned out unique—and the kids were proud to show off their work.

We were thrilled by the dancers’ performances, filled with traditional choreography and lively character movements. Both kids and adults joined in, and the highlight for many was the live demonstration of the Dominican whip, which kept everyone amazed.

The event celebrated Dominican culture and folklore while giving everyone the chance to learn something new and connect with one another. Afterward, we wrapped up the day with lunch and dessert at Mi Finca across the street.

It was a joyful day full of learning, creativity, and community. The children left with big smiles, great memories, and curiosity for what we’ll explore together next.
