Stretch, breathe, lengthen
Arms lifted, energy rising
Earlier this month, our adult learners at Casserly House were treated to a special experience in mindfulness and movement. On December 8th and 9th, we welcomed Chanelle John, a mindfulness practitioner and yoga teacher, to guide both of our groups through simple grounding techniques designed to support emotional well-being during challenging times. Our volunteers joined in too, making it a full-community practice.
In preparation, instructors introduced helpful vocabulary so everyone could understand the tools Chanelle shared. From the moment the sessions began, participants were invited to check in with themselves, expressing how they felt and noting their level of energy and their heart rate.
Chanelle taught a variety of accessible breathing practices, such as the extended exhale, 4-4-6 breath, and letting-go breaths, each demonstrated slowly so learners could follow with ease. She also guided relaxing movements including jaw and hand softening, shoulder and neck rolls, stretches to the sky, and even a self-hug. Later, participants explored simple mantras, like “I am, I can”, and a short visualization to help anchor positive intentions.
Throughout the session, learners checked in again, noticing how the techniques shifted their mood and energy. Many shared the exercises they loved most and committed to trying them again at home whenever they feel stressed, anxious, or sad.
What stood out most was the sense of connection—all levels of English learning side by side, supporting one another, and experiencing the benefits together. Chanelle’s soothing voice brought a feeling of safety and belonging that filled the room.
We are deeply grateful for this practice and for Chanelle’s thoughtful presence. Moments like these strengthen our community and remind us how powerful it can be to pause, breathe, and reset—together.
Opening the shoulders, expanding the breath
