In March, I offered a snapshot into the lives of our immigrant neighbors during this challenging time via the Casserly House blog. Today, I convey a collection of quotes – that illustrate the difference that Casserly House makes over time – from the various perspectives of a collaborator, community workshop attendees, neighborhood parents and children, a volunteer, and ESOL adult learners. Still, after 25 years, “it takes a village” to move ahead!
Neighborhood parents and children:
“Offering practical information in the context of caring relationships allows us (immigrants) to move toward our goals, especially for our children.”
“You are always thinking of us; Thank you.”
– From parents who sought assistance from Casserly House about the education of their children, who are now thriving in exam schools!
As we celebrated “Unifying Love Flares: CSJ at 150 years” with a backyard bonfire, one child excited exclaimed, “This is my first s’more,” with a chorus of head-nods in response. Among the children, hopes were shared. A consistent expression was being healthy and safe with gratitude for family. Another chimed in, “I have a hope for teleporting!”
ESOL adult learners’ comments (translated) from a recent evaluation:
“I like the interaction of the teachers with students. It’s like a family.”
“I love the teacher’s love for us.”
“I love Casserly House, cause when I’m there, I feel at home. People show respect to one another.”
Workshop Attendees:
“I learned that I have rights as a renter. I understand now the best way to communicate (in writing and keeping records) with my landlord. Happy to know there are organizations to help immigrants.”
– 2024 Housing Rights Workshop Attendee from ABCD Boston-Roslindale ESOL adult learner, translated from Haitian Creole.
“Adjusting to the US culture and learning English are the biggest challenges.”
“Creating this type of space where we (immigrants) can be with each other is very important, especially now. Thank you.”
“I learned about my community and ways to cope and remain calm with music, dance, and a walk in the park.” 2025 Health and Wellness Workshop Attendees, translated from Spanish.
Collaborator:
“I appreciate the collaborative nature of your work with us, and other organizations and business that serve Roslindale. As our community explores the needs of the larger community, you have been a driving force bringing organizations together to tackle these issues.”
– Interim Executive Director, Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation
Volunteer: Dan shares about his volunteer ESOL instruction:
“I volunteer with people who have recently come to this country and who do not speak English. That affects all day-to-day activities: shopping for groceries, asking for directions, and even in a medical checkup and children’s school, not being able to voice concerns or ask questions. The English classes at Casserly House help immigrants gain skills and confidence.”
